Hiding Your Site Behind a Login Box
What if youâre building an intranet web site with Joomla? Organizations use intranet web sites internally to share information among employees and/or volunteers. Generally, this type of site is out of the public view, yet potentially large numbers of people still need to access it.
An extranet is a site where you might share information with company or organizational partners, such as an external sales team, franchise owners, and so on (Chapter 14 discusses how the Kampgrounds of America, KOA, did this with their extranet site for franchise owners.) Again, the information should be kept from public view but still be easily accessible to those who need it.
In an organization with a board, you might have a special web site just for board members. This site allows board members to have their own behind-the-scenes conversation, perhaps recorded in a discussion forum, yet out of the public view.
In any of these scenarios, you might choose to hide the entire web site behind a login box. Here are the steps to set it up:
1. Create your sections, categories, articles, and menus, as usual.
2. Set all article and menu item access levels to Registered or Special.
3. Make sure the modules that drive all menus are set to the same Registered or Special user level.
4. Create a new menu. Do not set the corresponding menu module to appear on the site; itâs probably not needed.
5. Create a single item for this menu, which is the login page. Make sure its access level is set to Public.
6. Use the Login Description Text to put some introductory text on the page, requiring login to see the site. Set the Login Redirect to the registered user home page.
